Robin Black Walder - BlackBird
- Robin Black Walder’s journey is as dynamic as her designs. Passionate about marine conservation and animal welfare, she has always expressed her love for nature through drawing and sculpting. Influenced by meditation, martial arts, posture awareness, fossils, symbolism, and kindness, these elements are deeply embedded in her designs.
- After graduating from East Carolina University in 1992, Robin worked at the Florida State Attorney’s Office and in radio advertising before discovering her true calling—metalsmithing. In 1995, she immersed herself in jewelry-making at the Miami Jewelry Institute, setting the foundation for her career. Her early designs found a home at Chrisalyn on Lincoln Road, South Beach, before she ventured to New York City, where BlackBird was born. There, she honed her craft as a bench jeweler and machinist in the NYC Jewelry District, developed her signature BackBeads, and explored wax carving.
- Returning to Miami Beach in 2001, Robin deepened her focus on symbolism in jewelry, balancing her artistic work with teaching and Capoeira training. A new chapter began when she discovered Pilates, met her husband, and became certified to teach IM=X Pilates in 2003.
- In 2006, Robin and her family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where she thrived in the artistic energy of the River Arts District, raising her three children while designing in the Cotton Mill Studios. In 2012, feeling the pull of the ocean once again, she and her family settled in Jupiter, Florida, where BlackBird Jewelry continued to evolve, bringing her back to the rhythm of the tides and the endless inspiration of the sea.
- In 2015, she faced a life-changing experience with brain surgery, a moment that affirmed the power of intuition and resilience. Her years of meditation had prepared her to trust her instincts, leading her to expand her creative purpose. She began partnering with non-profits, using her jewelry as a medium to spark awareness, inspire meaningful conversations, and support causes that protect both people and the planet.
- Now firmly rooted in Jupiter, Florida, BlackBird Jewelry has come full circle. The same design ideas that started in NYC have evolved into full collections. BackBeads, sculptural expressions, Threaders, and hand-fabricated one-of-a-kinds now integrate into a unique component system designed to support mindfulness, focus, and inner balance, deepening the spiritual and symbolic essence of her work.
- Robin’s mission goes beyond creating jewelry—she crafts tools for self-reflection, personal empowerment, and a deeper connection to both the self and the world.
